Creating a Masterpiece
A unique shot capturing busy construction bees in 1964. Opening day for the brand new Howard Johnson Motor Lodge was slated for mid summer 1965 and a lot of work is still ahead. Howard Johnson Jr. was on hand with the owner making sure this large new HoJo – one of the first on the west coast of the United States – was on track to open.
The footings for the iconic circular, barrel-arched lobby building are in the foreground. Harbor Boulevard, still just a small city street, is slowly becoming a busy thoroughfare. The trees surrounding the Matterhorn – now only nine years old – do not obscure much of anything. The new seven-story tower building erected behind the photographer would offer unparalleled views into Disneyland for decades to come.
On the occasion of Disneyland’s 56th birthday and HoJo’s 46th, it’s nice to see certain things remain the same. Long live Disneyland and one of her favorite and loving neighbors, the HoJo!
